Submotion Orchestra are back with an album release comprising of the best remixes of tracks from their critically acclaimed Finest Hour album. After a huge amount of support from fellow artists and bass fans around the world, the album went straight in at number 10 in the iTunes electronic music charts on it's day of release.

Featured on the album are the singles Always and All Yours, nestled among some stunning album track remixes.

Always is a skittering mid tempo track which draws on Submotion’s dubstep roots but also incorporates elements of scat singing and melodic keys. In the remix department is Synkro with a minimally inspired version, which is both hypnotic and haunting. Synkro has proved himself a force to be reckoned over the last twelve months, releasing on labels such as Exit (Mosaic Music EP), Blackout Music and Med School (New Blood). Major support for Synkro has come from names like dBridge, Instra:mental, ASC, Chris Coco, Giles Peterson, Brendon Moeller, Mary Anne Hobbs, London Electricity, Kasra & many more.

Laxx who skews the beats of Always and delivers a mix where the emphasis is most decidedly on dub. Laxx, aka Jamie Churchill, is a DJ and producer from Oxford and has been played by some of the biggest names in Dubstep, including N Type, Emalkay, Jack Sparrow, Ruckspin and Walsh, and been involved in remixes for artists and DJs like Hadouken and Kissy Sellout.

All Yours comes in two mighty remix flavours. The first one comes courtesy of dubstep don Jack Sparrow, whose Circadian LP and other releases on Tectonic, Mad Decent and Wall of Sound have resulted in him carving out an enviable reputation.

The second comes from SeeMore Productions, who bring a slightly more relaxed feel to the song, skillfully blending a suggestion of hip hop rhythms with some ultra subtle Detroit style instrumentation. Not much is known about this anglo US outfit but with remix credits including Foreign Beggars and Slum Village you can be sure that the track is in safe hands.

This remix album is perfect complement to the stunning list of releases coming from the Submotion Orchestra camp, ably supported by label mates, musical friends and gentlemen of the electronic music world. Have a listen here and pick up your copy today.

In June 2010 Exceptional Records released the first installment of the From Disco To Dubstep series, a collection of the best and most varied tracks from the first ten years of the label, with the aim of demonstrating exactly what Exceptional is all about.

Such was the success of the first Disco To Dubstep album that Exceptional Records have put together a follow up compilation album titled ‘Episode 2 – One Step Beyond’ to lead the listener onwards in a continuation of the musical journey.

Presented in a vaguely chronological manner, the album kicks off with Taras Van De Voorde’s Crepe d’Amour, a collaboration with fellow Dutchman Jelle Kuipers, and a perfect blend of tech-house with progressive vibes. As Taras himself says "It's never predictable what kind of sound we will come up with, but for sure it will be warm and soulful." Taras is a long time favourite of Pete Tong, having scored Essential New Tune billing on his show on a couple of occasions (The Game, and Don’t Stop Up).

From Holland to Sweden and the electronic house brothers Arvid & Erik Niklasson, commonly known as Plej, and Akufen's Mix of ‘Blue’. Their playful, soft, melodic and experimental approach to house music combines beautifully with Canadian Akufen (Marc Leclair) and his minimal house take on the stunning track.

Next up is Incurable by Butti 49, a full-of-sunshine bouncy vocal track, with the feel of a Balearic summer, featuring the sultry voice of Londoner Mayia James. The remix by Young David, best known for his Audio Therapy releases, takes the tracks just a tadge more mainstream with some deft instrumental touches.

The mysterious Infiltrators take Alex Berg aka Cloud’s What You Want, with it’s elegant ethereal instrumentation and poignant vocal refrains, and shake it up to deliver a funked up piece of soulful electronica/leftfield house.

Lying between electro house and noisy techno Flagsuckerz by 10 Rapid delves into the darker, twisted side of electronica. Featuring big thrashy synths and crazy production, the track is filled with an air of insanity. Leatherhead tear it down in the remix department to deliver a stripped down version - taking in dirty house grooves, grinding electro, and everything in between.

The Rogue Element is the king of style-blending, genre-jumping music. Mistakes starts gently with a guitarlike synth riff filling out with floating harmonized vocoder vocals, like a sun-drenched, hippy afternoon of the new decade. Simple but effective electro-drums, toy keyboards and blips and beats speak of burning up in the sun, liberation, and the world being just too bright to take. Disco To Dubstep’s Rogue double header is completed by the irrepressibly discerning peddlers of dirt disco Loose Cannons and their remix of Lumina, a dark and twisted beast, stabbed with filtered keys, thundering bass and raining synths.

Dekata Project’s funky My People features stunning soul vocals from Yvette, of Boxettes fame, riding high over a tight rhythm track, insistent horns and beats. Toby IOI, who has worked with artists such as Sway, Estelle’ Blak Twang and Wiley provides a superb arrangement of the piece.

Next up are the Swedish group Favorite Flava with their fantastic blend of soul, pop and funk, skillfully remixed by the ultra-hip production collective Funkystepz, signed to the ultra-cool Hyperdub label. Radioplastic’s Modern Age hits like an electronic tidal wave, combining an epic riff with fierce chunky rhythms with an occasional vocal, remixed by breakbeat superstars Napt, with their stormin’ breaks based mix, full of twisted electronics.

Audioglider’s beautfully atmospheric piece of pure technical magic is here remixed by Cid Inc, (Henri Hurtig), who has been named one of Beatport´s best progressive house artists and enjoyed releases through Inkfish, TrivalVision, Global Underground and Bedrock. This wonderful collaboration flows beautifully into, Strings, taken from Cloud’s much acclaimed album Hökarängen Space Program. This is an exercise in classic simplicity that’s full of depth, reworked here by Throwing Snow who draws on his own vast array of influences, displaying traces of dubstep, post-rock and folk. DJ Magazine say that “Cloud paints the sort of cosmic landscapes most can only dream of – all the while barely breaking sweat.”

Merry Go Round by Gentlemen’s Dub Club member Planas is dreamy swirling haze with dubstep flourishes featuring the sumptuous vocals of Claudia Georgette. Ruckspin takes it one step deeper into dub putting his own spin on the track which should filed under required listening. In keeping with the collaborative Exceptional approach Planas then jumps in on remix duties for Black Diamond Bay’s electro-pop piece I Dreamt We Were Bank Robbers, delivering a deep dubstep infused version which complements the original perfectly.

Taken from their amazing debut album, Finest Hour, Submotion Orchestra wrap up this eclectic compilation with All Yours, a powerful yet delicate track which showcases their many splendored musical talents. This mighty remix comes courtesy of dubstep don Jack Sparrow, whose releases on Tectonic, Mad Decent and Wall of Sound have helped him carve out an enviable reputation. The charm of “All yours” seems to have rubbed off on Mr Sparrow who sets aside his own often more crunchy persona to deliver a remix of great depth and beauty.

In summary then “From Disco to Dubstep – Episode 2” is a wide ranging electronic exploration which joins many of the dots in an ever mutating series of scenes.

This is a celebration of a series of genres that may perhaps seem quite disparate, yet find common ground thanks to their roots in electronic software and the collaboration between the many label mates – positive proof that all is not lost in the world of compilations, and a sparkling showcase for Exceptional’s eponymous output.

Nursery of Naughtiness new single 'The Echo' OUT NOW

facebook/nonmusic
1. The Echo
2. Until You Master Time

BUY NOW FROM iTunes and Beatport

Nursery of Naughtiness are back with their latest single The Echo OUT NOW on the Exceptional Black Label. This is the band’s 10th release on Exceptional Records and comes in their 5th year with the label.

To promote the single release Nursery of Naughtiness have put togther a stunning promo mix featuring tunes from the likes of Vipercorps, AAA, The Whiteboys, Standard Procedure, Schroff, Trentemoller and so many more. See below for details and FREE DOWNLOAD.

Alastair Dawson, Nursery of Naughtiness says "With this E.P we took the elements of dubstep that we love and combined them with our own production style."

The Echo is a power struggle… a battle between beauty and the beast, peace and destruction, the two hearts which beat inside each of us. Opening with soft wavering pads and backed by a heavy steady trip hop beat the wandering tonality gives the opening section an expectant air. The relative peace is quickly broken by the introduction of the unique NoN brand of dirty synths, tremulous, dark and discordant. Darkness has Arrived. Returning melodic pads fight to try and restrain the piece, to bring it back down to earth and anchor it in some sort of understandable form, but each time it breaks free, unshackled and rampant. Nursery of Naughtiness, as ever, strike the perfect line between these two bipolar personalities, cleverly combining them in the final section, pulling the music forward in the same direction.

Until You Master Time continues the theme of duality, picking up where The Echo leaves off, at the same tempo and with a similar rhythm. It could almost be an echo of the echo, with it’s gentler pads and trippy beat, set with a plaintive and indistinct female vocal sample, emploring the listener to ‘take me away from here.’ The breakdown features male spoken word samples reminiscent of Michael Caine doing his best British disdain.

These two tracks make for a killer combination and add yet another cracking release to NoN’s exceptional black catalogue.

With support from Steve Lamacq, Annie Nightingale on Radio 1, Loose Cannons on Kiss FM and Jon Kennedy and Clint Boom on XFM, plus singles of the week at Beatport, 7Digital and iTunes. the Nurseries continue their meteoric rise.

2. Always (Synkro Remix)
3. Always (Laxx Remix)
EXEC 155

"Stunning" - The Guardian
"An object of desire" - Metro
"As stylish as fine fusion cuisine" - The Times

The new single, Always, is already one of the highlights of the live show. Always is a skittering mid tempo track which draws on Submotion’s dubstep roots but also incorporates elements of scat singing and melodic keys. Vocalist Ruby Wood is as ever on supreme form, aided and abetted by Simon Beddoe’s atmospheric horn parts and Taz Modi’s shimmering keys, all performed over Dom’s electronics and the rock solid rhythms served up by Tommy, Danny and Fatty.

The whole thing is deftly put together by a group of musicians who have the confidence and ability to know just how much to put in, and just as importantly how much to leave out.

In the remix department we have Laxx who skews the beats and delivers a mix where the emphasis is most decidedly on dub. Laxx, aka Jamie Churchill, is a DJ and producer from Oxford. He has been played by some of the biggest names in Dubstep, including N Type, Emalkay, Jack Sparrow, Ruckspin and Walsh, and been involved in remixes for artists and DJs like Hadouken and Kissy Sellout.

Also stepping in to complete the musical package is Synkro with a more minimally inspired version, which is both hypnotic and haunting.

Audioglider's 'The Massive Dynamic EP' out now

Exec157
1. Massive Dynamic
2. The Engineer
3. Moretea Vicha

Buy now from iTunes and Beatport

LISTEN!

Barely pausing for breath the ever-prolific Roberto Sodano aka Audioglider is back with three brand new tracks, cunningly bundled together and released into the world by the Exceptional Blue label this week.

Title track Massive Dynamic is a deep house influenced piece with percussive beats, feathered blips and electronic noodles cuing up the track, slowly building and evolving. Wah guitar stabs and funky pads join the mix and punctuate the groove, willing the foot to tap and the head to nod. A vocal sample, like Chemical Brothers ‘Hey Boy’, addresses the DJ... “Hey DJ”, and is left hanging in the room, giving space for the listeners imagination to continue the call. The parts are restrained, expertly interchanging and taking their own subtle moments in the limelight, never too busy, never clashing, always laid-back and eeeeasy.

The Engineer is a rare example of Roberto’s talents on the guitar. Delicate and rhythmic acoustic and electric guitars kick us off, joined swiftly by filtered drums. 80’s styled pads build and shimmer, and a dub-influence offbeat bass completes the groove. Refined, controlled and beautiful… Audioglider at his very best.

Those who enjoyed Audioglider's track, Whiskers, on Nick Warren's GU 30, will also enjoy the evolution of the euphoric, uplifting, cyclical melodies of Moretea Vicha. Indistinct ethnic swirling pads are pulled back down to earth by solid beats and strong bass. This stunning track occasionally comes into focus as sublime swells flit into view, only to fade away so quickly you’re not sure if they were ever there. It’s no wonder this master craftsman has drawn comparisons which the likes of Ulrich Schnauss, Jon Hopkins and Tom Middleton.

"I drop in fragments of melodies all the way through my music, with the hook/main melody only becoming apparent from the amalgamation of micro melodies." says Audioglider. The result is off-the-wall harmonies that smoothly slide into moments of quiet elation, conjuring images of wide, bright sonic landscapes. An audio journey to that golden time when the sun is sinking beyond the horizon and the party has just begun.

"Baby listen up, I will speak slow, give you something to believe, something you cannot control. And I'll give you that flash, chase together dreams, give you something none of you could ever have forseen."

Black Diamond Bay return with their latest single Speak Slow, taken from their impressively eclectic and wonderous ‘Come The Desert’ album. The band have building on their fantastic live reputation this summer with a recently confirmed slot on the BBC introducing stage at Reading and Leeds Festivals in August.

Speak Slow is based around a repeated vocal hook performed first by female (Agne Motie) and then responding male (Jesse O’Mahoney) vocalists. It’s a sensual promise between two young lovers that whispers in your ear, it lies on your tongue and seduces you with it’s subtle and ever evolving instrumentation, until it creeps into your heart and refuses to leave. Of all the myriad of genres BDB fly through this is the most perfectly executed, and the most revealing of their songwriting prowess.

Completing the package are remixes from Nah and Rooge, and Olegin 10, the esteemed winners of our recent remix competition. For those budding remixers out there, do sign up to our various SoundCloud pages as we have run some excellent competitions recently which have resulted in releases through Exceptional Records for the most talented.

Nah and Rooge are two talented Italian electro and dubstep producers. These guys are so fresh out of the box you’ll find very little about them online, and only a handful of recordings. They’re currently putting together their debut album and are definitely ones to watch for the future.

OLT aka Olegin10 is an audio engineer, producer, sound designer and Graduate of the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) in Miami, USA. Olegin10 has now been successful in two Exceptional Remix competitions, having had his remix of Audioglider’s Coming Up For Air released as part of the album of the same name. His technically stunning remix of Speak Slow shows the extent of his audio mastery.

Planas - Merry Go Round - New single out now

LISTEN!

Buy from iTunes and Beatport

Dubmeister Planas takes time out from his duties with Gentlemens Dub Club to deliver his first full release for exceptional blue. Merry Go Round is dreamy swirling haze with dubstep flourishes featuring the sumptuous vocals of Claudia Georgette.

Kicking off with Agbekor as his first release on Ranking, Planas, aka Toby Davies has already acquired a staunch following amongst the dubstep fraternity whilst his involvement with the hotly tipped Gentlemens Dub Club is spreading the word much wider still, whilst his rather special remix of Submotion Orchestra’s Finest Hour brought yet more fans into the fold.

We’ve got some excellent remixes too. Toby ioi’s genre crossing sound has already been making waves on Radio 1, 1xtra, Choice FM and Rinse Toby has worked with and alongside artists such as Sway, Estelle’ Blak Twang and Wiley and for us he delivers a spankingly bouncy mix of Merry Go Round Dubstep don Ruckspin takes it one step deeper into dub putting his own ermmm spin on the track, which should befiled under required listening, And if that’s not enough we also have Seemore Productions, signed to DJ K.O's Elementality Productions in New Jersey, doing the honours in the remix department.

Nursery of Naughtiness - 00 - single out now

NURSERY OF NAUGHTINESS
1. 00
2. Future
Buy from iTunes and Beatport

To celebrate this release we are giving away a FREE 30 min mix feat. dubstep, breaks and future jungle, see below.

After a slight (but seemingly achingly long) hiatus, your favourite noisy master bastards Nursery of Naughtiness are back with a brand new single 00 backed by angelic sibling B-side Future. During their time off the band have been busy chasing big dogs, kicking dirt, inventing new noises, playing tag, experimenting with stop motion film (http://youtu.be/_O1uDlVbCtM) and generally causing trouble. The band are also in need of a new front man/MC who must be very energetic, committed and willing to take orders. Drop the guys a line through their various online portals.

00 is a dirty offbeat mess of noise, with tinges of the Prodigy, a solid hook distorted by some top production… like washing your whites in the Thames. Street MC vocals over broken breaks beats complete the track which I’m finding really hard to describe, and much easier to listen to.

Future is the angelic alter ego, all minimalist tribal drumming. Alternating pads bring a slight melody and even, dare I say it, tune to the piece. The tribal many vocal samples light up the track imploring us to have ‘Faith in the future’. Based on this package I’d say I definitely have faith in the future, and that future is naughty.

Black Diamond Bay - I Dreamt We Were Bank Robbers - Single Out now

Out now on Exceptional Red Buy from iTunes and Beatport

The week sees the long-awaited release of Black Diamond Bay's new single I Dreamt We Were Bank Robbers featuring a fantastic remix from Planas. Listen below and grab a free download mix from one of our esteemed competition winners Black Dove Underground

Here’s what he band had to say about the track – "I had a dream that I was a bank robber dying in a hail of bullets with my partner by my side. It was a beautiful, filmic dream so we made a song about it. We were experimenting at the time with using the voice as an instrument, cutting up various sounds we made and using them as we might use a guitar or piano. That gave us the hook that starts the song. Tom wrote the piano in his head and programmed it into the computer. He’s always doing that. The coalition of the stuttering vocal hook and the sweeping violins and pianos effects a kind of nervous beauty."

Doing the remix honours this time around we have the talented Planas who delivers a deep dubstep infused version which complement sthe original perfectly Kicking off with Agbekor as his first release on Ranking Records. Planas aka Toby Davies has already acquired a staunch following amongst the dubstep fraternity whilst his involvement with the hotly tipped Gentlemens Dub Club is spreading the word much wider still, whilst his rather special remix of Submotion Orchestra’s Finest Hour brought yet more fans into the fold.

4. Dirty City (Supermind)

‘Favourite Flava represents all my favourite flavours in music. Edginess, cutting beats, vibrating bass and melodic vigour. Stray's writing capabilites and vocals sit hauntingly well on each track. ‘Favorite flava is smoking, these dudes are bringing some heat!’ Nick Holder, DNH Records
‘A Superb slice of modern neo soul’ STRAIGHT NO CHASER MAGAZINE
‘This is modern soul at it’s best taking in good production and sounds with the ability to sooth any soul’ 4 out of 5 –UPDATE MAGAZINE

Favorite Flava, the Swedish group consisting of producer/multi instrumentalist Erik Lidén (Erik L), singer and producer Mattias Axelsson (Stray) and singer Paul Mac Innes are back with their latest offering VII.

Favorite Flava create a fantastic blend of soul, pop and funk and demonstrate an unusual approach to melodies, unconventional chord progressions and beautiful harmonies… all mixed together with painfully honest Nordic melancholies. VII follows their critically acclaimed debut album ”Different Phase” (released in 2009 on Ubeat Records) and is reminiscent of 1980's synthesized funk and futuristic studio experiments with a playfulness that could be likened to Hendrix or Prince's uncompromising studio work.

On remix duties we have Funkystepz a young production collective comprising four creative producers and one DJ under the names of Stimpy, Renay, Scrufizzer, Twitch and DJ Maxsin. All individually talented their combined talents are a force to be reckoned with on the UK funky house circuit enjoying support from BBC Radio 1, Kiss and Choice FM, as well as many underground stations and now host their own radio show on Rinse FM. Funkystepz have also been called upon in by distinguished labels like Island, All Around The World/Universal and Mercury Music Group to do remix work for the likes of Tinchy Stryder, McLean, Gyptian, James Bellamy and RD (Ruff Diamonds).

Submotion Orchestra's debut album is out now on CD and download

submotion.co.uk

The long awaited album Finest Hour is released this week through the Exceptional Blue label.

You can buy the album at the links below:

BUY THE CD: Amazon, Play.com, Chemical Records and Juno

DOWNLOAD : iTunes, Beatport, Amazon and JunoDownload

“Submotion Orchestra are on the rise, and for good reason” Q
“A truly exciting proposition” Clash
“It blew me away. Somewhere between Cinematic Orchestra and dubstep - just right” Gilles Peterson
“Earth-shaking, lush and celestial, they draw upon dubstep, soul and electronica. Their music is at once delicate and heavy, spacious and dense, highly atmospheric but firmly-rooted” The Head Phone Commute
“Their talent is that they can do this music live, with skill and energy” Music OMH

The Leeds-based seven piece Submotion Orchestra present their debut album ‘Finest Hour’ on Exceptional Blue records. Bewitchingly beautiful, perfectly crafted and conveying the melancholy menace of what Marvin Gaye called ‘Inner City Blues’, this is at once classic and utterly current.

We believe that this album will stand in the pantheon of iconic British soul/bass music, alongside Massive Attack’s ‘Blue Lines’, Soul 2 Soul’s ‘Club Classics’, ‘New Forms’ by Reprazent, Goldie’s ‘Timeless’ and James Blake’s eponymous longplayer. The spot-on arrangements, instrumentation and production are adorned with the sublime vocals of Ruby Wood – reminiscent of Jill Scott, but with added heartache.

Finest Hour follows the recently released single All Yours. Radio support has come from Trevor Nelson and Gilles Peterson on Radio 1, the latter of whom gave the band his ultimate seal of approval - a Radio 1 Live at Maida Vale session. Additional radio support came from Mista Jam on 1xtra, plus the band bagged plays on Radio 2, NME Radio, Jazz FM and Los Angeles tastemaker station KCRW.
